Server management

Auto Roles

Assign roles automatically when members or bots join, return, or meet a timed rule.

Updated October 21, 20261 min read

Getting started

1

Prepare the role

Create the target role in Discord and position NightCrew above it.

2

Create a rule

Open Auto Roles in the sidebar and give your new rule a name.

3

Choose the trigger

Select member join, bot join, restore on rejoin, temporary role, account age, role dependency, or another supported condition.

4

Set safeguards

Add required or excluded roles, delay, priority, duration, and whether a returning member's role should be restored.

5

Check who the rule affects

Review which members and roles the rule can affect before activating it.

6

Test and monitor

Use a test member, inspect recent runs and failures, and confirm temporary roles are removed at the expected time.

Settings reference

Use this reference when you need to check what a setting does.

Target role

Discord role the rule assigns or restores.

Trigger mode

Member join, bot join, rejoin restoration, or temporary assignment.

Duration

Minutes before removal for temporary rules; zero is not temporary.

How it works

Here’s what happens once you’ve finished setup.

  1. 1
    Trigger

    A qualifying member event occurs.

  2. 2
    NightCrew

Checks the module, rule, role, and hierarchy.

  3. 3
    Assignment

Adds the role and schedules removal when temporary.

Example

EXAMPLE
Member onboarding

Assign NightCrew Member on join and use Verification separately if access must wait for approval.

What NightCrew needs
  • Manage Roles
  • Server Members intent

Troubleshooting

Join role is delayed

Large guild member events can be delayed; confirm Server Members intent.

Temporary role remains

Keep the bot online through expiration and verify the rule is active.
